OCTOBER 2019. KENNESAW, Ga.— Gene Henssler, Ph.D., Principal and Director of Henssler Financial, was honored with the Founders & Directors Award for 2019 at the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. The special award is given to Georgia radio professionals who have excelled but may not have received the recognition they deserve.
Dr. Henssler was first asked by a local AM radio station manager, Eric Seidel, to be a featured financial guest on the Neal Boortz Show on Atlanta’s WGST in 1986. Shortly thereafter, “Dr. Gene,” as he was known, was offered his own call-in radio show, “Money Talks,” where he provided fact-based, no-nonsense answers to listeners’ financial and stock questions.
The Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame in LaGrange, Ga., is a nonprofit organization founded in 2007. Its mission is to recognize radio professionals and preserve the history of Georgia radio. The organization inducts career achievement and legacy radio professionals annually in addition to bestowing the Founders and Directors Award and the Elmo Ellis Spirit Award. Seidel nominated Dr. Henssler for the Founders and Directors Award.
“I owe a tremendous amount to Georgia Radio,” said Dr. Henssler. “This honor is extremely humbling as I only hosted a weekly radio show. The induction gala was full of professionals who put their whole careers into making radio better every single day.”
“’Money Talks’ created a strong local interest in portfolio reviews and financial advice. It started out as a part-time consulting business—at the time I started radio, I was still a finance professor at Kennesaw State University. I never dreamed it would grow into the legacy it is today.”
The demand for financial consulting created by “Money Talks” led to the creation of G.W. Henssler & Associates, Ltd., a registered investment adviser. Over more than three decades, the firm continued to grow as the needs of clients increased. Today, Henssler Financial is comprised of two federally registered investment advisers, and is affiliated with Henssler CPAs & Advisers, LLC, a full-service tax and consulting firm; Henssler Insurance, LLC, which offers insurance services, such as life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability insurance and fixed-annuity products; Henssler Norton Insurance, LLC, an independent agency that coordinates coverage for individual, family and business assets; Henssler Capital, a manager of certain real estate investments for Henssler clients, and Henssler Property Management, which provides property management services to Henssler affiliates, Henssler clients, and other real property owners.
Nowadays, “Money Talks” is hosted by Henssler’s Associate staff who manage client accounts on a day-to-day basis.
“I had to spread out the responsibility over the years,” said Dr. Henssler. “I believe our clients enjoy hearing their Associates on air, as we always receive comments like, ‘I heard so-in-so on the air this weekend! He did a good job talking about IRAs.’ Our radio show gives us the opportunity to educate listeners on subjects that may not affect them today but will tomorrow.”
“I learned so much about how to talk to clients by hosting ‘Money Talks’ with Gene for so many years,” said Principal and Managing Director William G. Lako, Jr., CFP®. “You can’t underestimate the recognition that radio provides. Listeners invite you in each week, and they begin to think of you as a trusted friend. It makes a huge difference in our client relationships.”
During the last 33 years, “Money Talks” has aired on 640 AM WGST, 1160 AM The CFO, and currently airs on 920 AM WGKA. The financial talk radio show also self-syndicated across the state in 2013-2014, airing on six different stations from Dalton to Savannah.
