APRIL 2019. KENNESAW, Ga.— Henssler Financial is helping four graduating seniors at Kennesaw State University with the cost of their cap and gown for the Spring Commencement ceremony.
The financial burden of walking during the commencement ceremony was brought to Henssler’s attention through their work with the Kennesaw State University Campus Awareness, Resource & Empowerment (CARE) Services, which offers support to KSU students who have experienced homelessness, food insecurity and/or the foster care system.
“We first learned of their [KSU CARE’s] pantry where students can come once a month for food and toiletries,” said Pat Henssler, Principal at Henssler Financial. “Walking across that stage for a diploma is an accomplishment to be celebrated. But to do that, they have to buy a gown that they’ll never wear again. These are students who are struggling to eat.”
Responding to this need, Henssler Financial purchased four $100 gift cards to the KSU Bookstore, enabling these students to purchase their graduation announcements, cap, gown, medallion, and tassel for the ceremony.
“We have four students that are graduating this spring,” said Marcy Stidum, CARE Director. “Three of these students I recruited and have personally worked with since their senior year in high school. These students have fought against the odds to overcome so many obstacles.”
“Purchasing one-time use graduation regalia is a luxury some of these students can’t afford” added Stidum. “But, the students we help through KSU CARE Services have faced eviction, have had trouble getting enough food to eat from day to day or have ‘aged out’ of the foster care system without the support they need to launch successfully into adulthood.”
