JUNE 2019. KENNESAW, Ga.— Henssler Financial’s D.J. Barker, CWS®, a Managing Associate for the firm, is participating in Crossing For A Cure, a long-distance endurance paddle board challenge and international championship race for cystic fibrosis.
Barker will paddle board more than 80 miles from Bimini in the Bahamas back to the Florida mainland, while the proceeds from the fundraising will go to Piper’s Angels Foundation, whose mission is to support and improve the lives of families in the cystic fibrosis community through heightened awareness and providing education, life expanding activities, urgent financial support, and funding critical research.
“I was born and grew up in Miami, Florida where everything in my life happened on or around the water,” said Barker. “My first passions in life were SCUBA diving, surfing, boating, and fishing. There is nowhere I feel more connected or alive than on the ocean.” The crossing will begin at midnight, June 15, and Barker will be wearing a tracker, allowing his supporters to follow along on the journey.
Barker and his family consider Florida their second home, taking time and getting involved with beach initiatives to help keep the oceans clean. Barker first learned about “Crossing For A Cure” from the local surf shop where the family hangs out, Blueline Surf & Paddle Co., that also supports Piper’s Angels Foundation.
“The event was inspired because of the incredible health benefits of the ocean for those living with cystic fibrosis,” said Barker, noting he had researched the event before becoming involved. “My youngest daughter’s favorite quote from the movie Soul Surfer is, ‘I don’t need easy, I just need possible.’ I want my girls to see me participating in an event like Crossing For A Cure because I want to teach them that life is not easy, but anything is possible and achievable with the right attitude, hard work and dedication.”
“We all have struggles and we all need help at one time or another. It’s definitely easier to sit back while other people clean up the messes and find the cures, but I want to make a difference in the lives of others while I am still able to do so. I also want to inspire my children to take chances, create their own adventures, and live a meaningful life. If my participating in this challenge can raise awareness and money for Cystic Fibrosis and Piper’s Angels, then I’m in,” said Barker.
“We are so proud of D.J. for getting involved with this great cause!” said Stacy Haubenschild, a Principal of the firm and Chief Operating Officer. “We encourage employees to engage in charitable activities—it is a pleasure to see individual employees give based on their personal passions.”
“I’ll admit, I’m worried about him being out on the ocean that long, but I am also confident knowing that when D.J. puts his mind to something he will succeed with flying colors,” Haubenschild added.
