Indices closed out mixed on Thursday. The Dow and S&P 500 shed some points while the Nasdaq posted fractional gains. Moves were mixed on a variety of economic news. Retail sales decreased in December. Commerce Department data showed sales fell 1.2% versus expectations of a 0.2% gain. In earnings, Cisco Systems tacked on 1.9% today after reporting second-quarter profit and revenue that exceeded forecasts. The network gear maker also boosted its quarterly dividend by 6% and its buyback plan by $15 billion. Looking ahead, Nvidia and Applied Materials will release earnings details after the closing bell.
