A Green Monday

Monday’s session ended with gains. Alcoa led the Dow’s ascent in anticipation of its earnings release. After the close of trading, the aluminum titan reported its first quarterly loss since 2009. Posting a fourth-quarter loss of $191 million, or 18 cents a share, this compared with net income of $258 million, or 24 cents, a year earlier. Revenue, however, exceeded expectations. Hitting $5.99 billion, the result was beyond an anticipated $5.78 billion and was up from $5.65 billion, a year ago. Meanwhile, in merger moves, Bristol-Myers Squib has agreed to purchase Inhibitex for $2.5 billion. Elsewhere, crude oil shed 25 cents to settle at $100.31 a barrel.
