A Mixed Session

Indices closed out mixed on Friday. The Dow and S&P 500 ended in the green zone. The Nasdaq shed some points. Microsoft, Travelers and General Electric led the Dow’s ascent. Apple led losses on the Nasdaq. Crude oil futures tacked on 78 cents to settle at $103.05 a barrel. In earnings action, McDonald’s posted first- quarter earnings of $1.23 a share, up from $1.15, a year ago. Meanwhile, General Electric reported a first-quarter profit of $3.03 billion, or 29 cents a share, down from $3.43 billion, or 31 cents, a year earlier. Elsewhere, Kimberly Clark said net earnings hit $468 million or $1.18 a share, versus profit of $350 million or 86 cents, last year. Looking ahead, earnings season rolls on next week with details due from the likes of Apple, Amazon.com, Caterpillar, and Exxon Mobil.
