Mixed Moves

Friday’s session ended mixed. The Dow and S&P 500 shed some points while the Nasdaq posted fractional gains. Brands such as Accenture and BlackBerry traded lower following the release of less-than-stellar quarterly data. Meanwhile, consumer confidence declined this month. The University of Michigan’s final reading for June revealed a slight slip in consumer sentiment to 84.1 from 84.5 in May. On another note, business activity in the Midwestern region retreated in June. The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index fell to a weaker-than-expected 51.6 this month from 58.7 in May. Economists were expecting a reading of 56.
