Mixed Moves

Indices closed out mixed on Wednesday. The Dow and S&P 500 shed some points while the Nasdaq added slight gains. Trading ended mixed along the flat line amid a variety of economic news. New home sales jumped to an annual rate of 497,000 in June from a downwardly revised 459,000 in May. Economists were expecting sales to hit 482,000 in June. Meanwhile in earnings action, Caterpillar took a breather after reducing its forecast. Apple advanced following the release of quarterly data late Wednesday that showed profit and sales exceeded forecasts. Ford Motor Co. climbed to a 36-month high after boosting its full-year earnings target. Facebook reported quarterly numbers after the closing bell. The social-media titan surged 19 percent in post-session trading, after reporting earnings that beat estimates.
