Mixed Results

Indices closed out mixed on Friday. The Dow and S&P 500 shed some points. The Nasdaq posted slight gains. Chevron, Exxon Mobil and Cisco led declines on the Dow. Chevron reported less-than-excellent quarterly results. The oil titan said fourth-quarter profit hit $5.1 billion, or $2.58 a share, down from $5.3 billion, or $2.64, a year earlier. Meanwhile, the government said gross domestic product grew at an annualized 2.8% rate in the fourth quarter. The best performance since the second quarter of 2010, expansion was shy of an expected 3% growth rate. Elsewhere, crude oil slipped 14 cents to settle at $99.56 a barrel. Looking ahead, earnings season rolls on next week with reports due from such companies as Amazon, Eli Lilly and Exxon Mobil.
