Slight Gains

Indices closed out marginally in the green on Friday. Amazon.com led the Nasdaq’s ascent a day after the online retailer reported respectable quarterly data. Meanwhile, Starbucks stepped up in the wake of fiscal third-quarter results, released after the closing bell on Thursday, that exceeded expectations. On another note, consumer sentiment increased in July. In a final reading, the University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index hit 85.1, up one point from May’s reading and 1.2 points above July’s preliminary measure. Looking ahead to next week, the Federal Reserve will begin a two-day policy meeting, and the Labor Department will issue July employment figures.
