Slightly Mixed Moves

Indices ended mixed on Friday. The Dow and Nasdaq added fractional gains. The S&P 500 closed slightly in the red zone. Trading ended flat, having rebounded off earlier low levels. Technology shares in particular, moved up in late afternoon action. Brands such as Intel, Verizon, and United Technologies stepped up. Meanwhile, third-quarter GDP numbers were up. At 2%, the result beat expectations of a 1.8% rise, increasing from the second quarter’s 1.25% rate. On another note, the final reading on the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for October came in at a lower-than-anticipated 82.6 and below the previous estimate of 83.1. Economists had expected a reading of 83. In earnings news, quarterly net income for Aaron’s Inc. climbed to $28.9 million, or 38 cents a share, up slightly from $28 million, or 36 cents, in the same quarter, a year ago.
