Stocks Gain on M&A News, Earnings

Indices ended in positive territory Monday. Brands such as Bank of America, Alcoa, and Hewlett-Packard led the Dow’s upswing. Stocks stepped up on merger news. Cigna has agreed to purchase Nashville-based HealthSpring for $3.8 billion. Oracle will acquire RightNow Technologies for $1.43 billion. On another note, crude oil jumped $3.87 to settle at $91.27 a barrel. Netflix and Texas Instruments posted quarterly data after the closing bell. Netflix said third-quarter net income rose 65 percent to $62.5 million, or $1.16 a share. Texas Instruments reported that profit fell to $601 million, or 51 cents a share in the third quarter, from $859 million, or 71 cents, a year earlier.
