Stocks Slip

Tuesday’s session ended in red territory. Alcoa, Home Depot, and Hewlett-Packard led the Dow’s descent. Meanwhile, crude oil shed 80 cents to settle at $93.98 a barrel. J.C. Penney posted quarterly data after the closing bell. The retailer reported a larger-than-expected first-quarter loss of $163 million, or 75 cents a share, compared with profit of $64 million, or 28 cents, a year ago. Looking ahead, Target is set to release earnings tomorrow and Wal-Mart will issue data on Thursday.
